If one thing is for certain, it’s that air pollution is indeed a silent killer that continues to run rampant not just in America, but the world at large. Often undetectable to the naked eye, the toxins that cloud the environment put us all at risk with more of a strain on children and the elderly. Unfortunately, it’s no surprise that much of this is a consequence of human activity and our everyday lifestyle contributes to the problem. Car companies are constantly under scrutiny from environmentalists that result in the push for more eco-friendly vehicles. However, Tesla Motors has taken the task of providing a solution to air pollutions caused by car to a whole new level. Telsa’s engineering team may have revolutionized the field with the introduction to the world market of the HEPA filters system. Not only does it scrub clean  the  air inside the car, but in the following minutes, the HEPA filters systems began to vacuum the air outside the car as well, “reducing PM2.5 levels by 40%.”

Inspired by the air filter networks integrated into medical settings and NASA, Tesla is experimenting with innovative HEPA filtration systems. This specific model stands for “high-efficiency particulate arresting” designed to remove the impurities in its immediate environment. Its function is able to eradicate pollen, bacteria and pollution before it enters the cabin of the vehicle. By methodically filtering the toxins in and outside of the automobile, Tesla’s HEPA filtration systems enable a driving experience free from lethal pollution. What is now coined  by Tesla as“Bioweapon Defense Mode,” Tesla is now on the forefront of some real life batmobile technology.

This system was monitored on the smog-filled California highways, the rural backwoods of the Central Valley and metropolitan areas of China. Taking it a step further, Tesla tested its efficiency in a controlled environment where they could more accurately observe its efficiency. Placing a Tesla model X in literally a bubble of light, analysts were able to evaluate how well the filtration system worked. The results have been nothing less than remarkable. Within a mere 120 seconds of activation, the bioweapon defense mode reduced levels inside of the car from a deadly1,000 µg/m3 to a degree unrecognized by its pollution monitors. This allowed observers to remove their masks and breath in the oxygen replenished by the car’s filtration system.

Internally and externally, Tesla’s bioweapon defense mode was able to transmute the air quality within minutes. Results confirmed that on the outside of the vehicle, PM2.5 levels decreased by a whopping 40%. This means that not only will air quality improve for the driver, but for others in close proximity as well. Telsa’s lead engineer team stated in a press statement, “Bioweapon Defense Mode is not a marketing statement, it is real. You can literally survive a military grade bio attack by sitting in your car.”




For highly polluted parts of the world such as China and India, this highly groundbreaking feature may be a selling point. Given that these two are statistically the most polluted regions in the world, foreign investors may be turned onto Tesla’s innovative solutions. During a time where cars and pollution combat are hardly used in the same sentence, Tesla Motors may very well be on the verge of a breakthrough. The organization will continue to perfect its system’s micro-geometry and chemical passivation mechanisms in the primary and secondary filters so even if updated filters become available, they will be easily replaceable.
